Sleep Apnea Treatments in Olney, MD

Sleep apnea is a condition which severely affects the overall health of those who experience it. If a sleep physician has diagnosed you with the condition, our dental practice can help you regain a good night’s sleep. At Stanley Cohen, DDS, we treat obstructive sleep apnea by providing oral appliances.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by repeated pauses of breath during sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, where air is unable to flow through the nose or mouth, and central sleep apnea, when the brain fails to send signals to muscles that assist in breathing. We send our patients for a sleep study to be diagnosed by a trusted sleep physician. At our Olney dental office, we treat the most commonly occurring type of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, with oral appliances.

Sleep Apnea Appliances

Although the standard treatment for sleep apnea is a CPAP machine, our Olney dentist understands that not everyone is tolerant of the machine’s mask that must be worn during sleep.

Therefore, Dr. Stanley Cohen offers state-of-the-art sleep apnea appliances as an alternative solution to obstructive sleep apnea. Some appliances move your jaw forward to stop the tongue and soft tissues from blocking the airway. Others focus on repositioning the tongue to then move the jaw forward. Some appliances will have the jaw move in small increments, and other appliances will allow the jaw to move several directions without dislodging the mouthpiece.

However, all of these appliances ultimately serve the same purpose: to prevent the collapse of soft tissue in the mouth and throat. This extreme relaxation of your tongue, throat muscles, and similar structures is what causes obstructive sleep apnea. By providing an appliance that widens the airway or restricts tongue movement, our Olney dentist makes sure that closure of the airway through soft tissue collapse, and therefore obstructive sleep apnea episodes, do not occur.
